National Park Week

Saguaro National Park

Saguaro National Park

Our National Parks might be the best idea ever!  I live just north of the country’s first National Park, Yellowstone.  After traveling the world, I still think that Yellowstone is the most impressive place on earth.  Wildlife, mountains and geysers are just a few of the quick highlights.  But, here in the USA, we have so many other National Parks to explore.  I have filmed at a great deal of them, and every time I do, I fall in love with them for their own specific reason.  Yosemite’s massive granite walls, The Grand Canyons views, Death Valley’s spring wild flowers and Acadia’s misty shores.  And…that is just the short list!  These jewels are the most valuable resource we have in this country and it is a resource we can preserve and pass on to many more generations.  The purity and freedom that these lands contain is contagious to all that touch it. We have the opportunity to experience this at any time and the responsibility to share it.  The National Parks will live on forever, as long as we continue to value their pricelessness.

Getting the shot…

When I go out on an adventure, I have one rule, DON’T miss the shot! I like to tell campfire stories, but there is nothing better than backing a story up with an epic moment of footage. For every amazing moment caught on film, there are dozens that will only exist in memory. Even when you are prepared with camera gear and the right intentions, it usually doesn’t go the way you want. But every once in awhile, you hit the jack pot. Here is one shot that put that luck in to perspective. Luck, they say, is where opportunity meets hard work. One camera, one opportunity, and a lot of hard work and educated guesses. Hit record, cross your fingers and sometimes it’s magic….. enjoy…

The Hat

It was born as of gift from my wonderful aunt Dolores.  It fit like a glove, cut to perfection, a tailor made wilderness crown.  I often wonder what I did before our fateful meeting.  It has become so much a part of ME.  The hat, the beanie, my trademark.  I have worn this hat from the bottom of the grand canyon to the arctic ocean.  I have worn it on the Conan O’Brien show, Oprah, and even to black tie affairs in New York City.  It has become a huge part of my life.  People always ask me, “What’s under that hat?!?”  I mostly like to keep them guessing.  I’ve heard speculation of a bozo the clown balding pattern, to a spiky type mullet.  Truth be told, I actually have quite a mane of hair.  Funny thing is, no one wants to see it now.
I showed up on a film set to make a commercial one day with my hair styled and ready to go.  The director quickly ask me if I had my hat.  I told him I left it at home.  He told me that nobody would know who I was without it.  He quickly sent his assistant to retrieve it.  Again, my hair only got a glimpse of the light of day.
Now, I just assume, and the hat goes for a ride on my head everywhere.  It has now become part of me.  But, I’m not the only one, other men have followed the same path.  Musicians like U2′s ‘The Edge’ and Zac Brown are all known for their iconic beanie.  In fact, you would hardly recognize them without it! The Edge

Zac BrownThis hat has been through a lot, but it almost met it’s death recently.  It would have been the kind of legendary death that the hat deserves, but like all things dear to your heart you wish it eternal life.  I was working with a wolverine, when he spotted my hat and  decided he wanted to have it.  In it’s powerful jaws it went, the wolverine giving it a heavy tug.  It was nearly ripped of my head, but my quick reactions saved the hats life.  It would have certainly been torn to shreds.  It now has a lopsided, uneven stretch to its right side, a true battle scar.   As time passes, I fear for the worst.  I watch my poor hat become more and more tattered.  It’s ever growing character is now simultaneously becoming it’s demise.  My aunt and others have desperately tried to find a match, but to no avail.  And, yet, I believe that somewhere out there it exists.  A Chaps brand, skull cap cut, dark navy blue knitted beanie. If you’re out there, come home!Casey AndersonCasey AndersonCasey Anderson

The Wave

They are Legendary.  Mavericks, Rincon, Pipeline, and Wimea, are all epic surf spots.  If you are serious about surfing in the USA, these are certainly on your bucket list.  But humans are not the only ones that hang loose.  I’ve watched dolphins, otters, and other critters catch a wave or two.  But a wave is not always liquid in form.  Right outside my living room window, just off my deck, is a wave that would make the Big Kahuna look like a Lil’ Rascal.  No, I don’t own ocean front property in Montana, but right out my door is the perfect natural phenomenon.  I call it simply, “The Wave”.
As the winds blow down the Paradise Valley, it funnels into my drainage.  As it moves up the drainage there is a bottle neck that is formed by the perfect ridge.  The winds then follow the contour of that ridge and form perfection; a massive wave of wind.

Wave, Eagles

How "The Wave" is formed

When the wind picks up, I look out my window to see as many as 4 surfers on at a time.  The surfers? Golden Eagles.
These raptors roll in to rip the righteous wave. AND they do not disappoint.  They rarely flap their massive wings to glide up and down the ridge line.  Sometimes just hovering, sometimes they accelerate at over 60mph.  They dip and dive, and do rolls and flips.  Occasionally they will lock talons and spiral toward the ground, only to let go at the last second.  It is one of the greatest shows on earth!  Occasionally a raven or a hawk will hop on the wave and do their best to “Shred the Gnar”.  But when it comes to this wave, there are no punks allowed, it is long boards only or in this case, long wings. Usually the eagles are not stoked and one will swoop in and bump them off the wave.  “Totally bogus dude!”
My TV stays off most of the time and just collects dust.  There is so much good entertainment to be found outside.  I will find myself just staring out the window, and I cant help myself but to call out “Surfers on!”  when my feathered friends stop by.

Oh Rats!

Wood Rat, Pack-ratA good portion of my time trying to capture rare and elusive animals on film is spent NOT capturing the rare and elusive at all. In fact, there is a cast of characters who love to steal the limelight from Mr. Mountain Lion or Mrs. Wolverine. One such character that I find to be a nemesis to my camera gear is the Bushy-tailed Woodrat, or commonly known as a pack rat. We have all been referred to or called someone a “pack rat” before because of their hoarding nature, and the Bushy- tailed Woodrat lives up to the reputation!  ANYTHING shiny or unique will be grabbed and taken back to its nest. Anything. And camera gear is one of their favorites. So when we set up our camera set-ups, it is not uncommon for one of these fuzzy little dudes to come along and inspect the situation. Often they give us up-close shots, chew up our gear, and knock it over, rendering it useless. Small bits and pieces of our camera gear have disappeared over the years, and my guess is, there is some Bushy-tailed Woodrat having a yard sale somewhere making some serious cash. Gotta love em!Wood Rat, Pack-ratPack ratPack Rat

Alaska

There exists a land of towering mountains, massive ice fields and abundant wildlife.  Alaska. Time has stood still there for thousands of years and yet somehow I have been lucky enough to visit it several times over the last year.  Whether I was in search of giant Kodiak grizzly bears, the elusive wolverine or the noble polar bear, Alaska never disappoints.  It’s a land where you can continue to find silence, a land of unbelievable fresh air and a land of great peace.  For wildlife lovers, it is a Mecca of sorts, and should be on every outdoor enthusiasts  bucket-list.  Once again, I will be making my northern pilgrimage this spring, and you can come along!!  This will certainly be a once in a lifetime trip!
